Local search when your whole market is one island
In a market the size of Malta, proximity barely separates anyone — a competitor twenty minutes away is still local. What decides local results here is category precision, review recency and consistent business data, not radius.

Proximity stops being a differentiator
Most local SEO advice is written for markets where distance sorts the results. Malta is roughly 27 kilometres end to end. For most services, every competitor is inside the radius that would decide a ranking elsewhere — so proximity flattens, and the other signals carry the whole weight.
That is good news, because the remaining signals are the ones you control.
Category precision beats keyword volume
The single most common fixable problem we see is a business filed under a category that is adjacent to what it does. An aluminium fabricator listed as a “hardware store” competes for the wrong queries and gets shown for the wrong intent. Pick the narrowest category that is still true, then let the secondary categories do the widening.
Say your service area once, clearly
State where you work in plain language, on the pages where a customer would look for it, and make sure the name, address and phone number match everywhere they appear — your site, your listings, your invoices, your social profiles. Mismatched data is not penalised so much as discounted: when two sources disagree, neither gets trusted.
What to check first
Open your listing and your homepage side by side. If the category, the opening hours, the phone number or the spelling of the business name differ between them, fix that before writing a single new page. It is the cheapest correction available and it is nearly always sitting there.
Article FAQs
Still have questions?The short answers.
Does adding town names to my pages help in Malta?
Rarely, and it usually hurts. Building a page for every locality on an island this size produces near-duplicate content competing with itself. One strong service page, with your service area stated plainly once, outperforms fifteen thin ones.
How much do reviews matter for local ranking?
Recency matters more than total count. A business with forty reviews spread across the last year generally reads as more active than one with two hundred that stopped three years ago. Steady arrival is the signal, not the number.
